Temping Through Uni: The Fantastic Head Start in Today’s Job Market

Challenge

An ambitious second-year student from a Russell Group University approached Knightsbridge Recruitment looking to gain professional experience alongside their degree. They recognised that while university develops critical thinking and academic discipline, employers are increasingly looking for candidates with real workplace experience.

The student was seeking work that would fit around lectures, exams, and term-time commitments, while allowing them to develop transferable skills, build confidence, and begin shaping a professional identity.

Our Approach

Knightsbridge Recruitment immediately recognised that temporary work could offer the perfect solution: flexible, varied opportunities that fit around academic commitments while providing valuable exposure to different industries.

We invited the student in for a registration meeting to discuss their academic schedule, previous experience, and long-term ambitions. Polished, personable, and eager to learn, they demonstrated excellent potential – the kind of candidate who would thrive in professional environments.

We began placing them in short-term temporary roles across reception, customer service, and back-office administration within a range of sectors including property, finance, and media. These assignments helped them develop essential workplace skills – professionalism, communication, time management, and adaptability – while balancing their academic commitments. Each role offered valuable insight into different workplace cultures and potential career paths after graduation.

Study Outcome

By their final year, the student had built an impressive portfolio of professional experience alongside their degree. Their CV stood out as someone who had already demonstrated commitment, tenacity, and the ability to perform under pressure.

Employers immediately recognised the value of their transferable skills and proactive attitude. On graduation, they were offered a permanent role as a Team Assistant within a top investment firm, a direct result of the skills and confidence developed through temping.

Why it worked

This approach worked due to:
• Access to flexible, high-quality temporary roles suited to a student’s schedule.
• A focus on building transferable skills from organisation and teamwork to professionalism and communication.
• Genuine support and mentoring throughout, helping the candidate turn temporary experience into long-term opportunity.

By choosing to temp while studying, this student not only earned valuable experience but also proved their ability to balance priorities, work hard, and adapt – qualities that continue to set them apart as they begin their professional career.
